REME
Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers
Prior to 1942 all Engineering support in the British Army was carried out by the following Corps:
• All weapons and mechanised armoured vehicles was the responsibility of - Royal Army Ordnance Corps
• All machinery, engineering plant and Royal Engineers transport was the responsibility of - The Royal Engineers
• All other forms of military transport was the responsibility of - Royal Army Service Corps
All forms of communication Equipment was the responsibility of - The Royal Corps of Signals
These organisations had stood the test of time supporting the army during the period between the wars, however once hostilities had begun serious problems began to manifest themselves.
To attempt to make these significant changes to the four Corps involved during a war would be fool hardly. The plan therefore was to be implemented in two phases.
In October 1942 the new organisation was raised on the existing formation of the RAOC, with elements from the RASC and the RE's. These changes included the transfer of a large number tradesmen from other corps into REME.
Phase two of the formation of REME began in 1949 with the reorganisation being completed in 1952.
REME is currently responsible for the modification, repair, and recovery of all equipment within the army, including electrical, electronic, and optics.
