Parachute Regiment Badge 1:3
Parachute Regiment Badge - The Wings
On the 21st of September 1940, twenty one officers and three hundred and twenty one other ranks stood on parade, at the Central Landing School for parachute and glider training at Manchester airport.
They were the first volunteers from all Regiments to answer the call from Winston Churchill the then Prime Minister who said. 'We ought to have a Corps of at least 5,000 parachute troops.'
In the summer of 1942 Lieutenant-General 'Boy' Browning decided that they ought to possess their own distinctive headwear, as opposed to the tradition of men wearing the berets of their former units.
According to legend, his wife the author daphne du Maurier, chose the famous maroon colour, so distinctive of airborne forces worldwide.
